Background

As part of the 'Web of Things' project, where the task is to design and develop a WoT prototype. I collaborated with an interdisciplinary team to create a modular smart home assistant alongside other web developers.

This project is all about teaching us the basics of Web of Things (WoT) so we can create unique and innovative products and services. It covers WoT/IoT and pervasive computing concepts, aiming to inspire our creativity and problem-solving skills to turn ideas into reality.

About the project

My role:

For this project, I focused on addressing the project's needs by designing both wireframes and low-fidelity and high-fidelity mobile prototypes. I iterated the designs based on user feedback, collaborating closely with developers to ensure smooth implementation. Additionally, I was responsible for designing the poster that was showcased during the exhibition, visually communicating the project's key concepts and outcomes.

Prosject Idea

The idea was to make it convenient for day-to-day life, being able to solve menial tasks such as watering your plant or displaying the current temperature. Similar to Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, our modular smart home assistant solution takes a different marketing approach. With its modularity, the end-user has more control over the capabilities of their home assistant.

Target audience

Our target audience consists of individuals who are interested in automating and controlling their homes. These users are likely to have a heightened interest in home technology compared to the average person because our product enables them to customize their system more freely than other closed systems

Brainstorming project concepts

Before getting started, we each brainstormed project ideas. We did a fast Crazy 8 session, sketching on sticky notes. This let us be creative and gave us lots of choices.

Upon reviewing one of the notes' it sparked an idea for a collaborative effort towards developing an automatic plant watering system. Through collective agreement, we selected this concept as our primary focus.

What did I learn?

Now that I've completed the course, I've gained a comprehensive understanding of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Web of Things (WoT). Exploring these concepts alongside my classmates was incredibly engaging and insightful.

I've learned about the integration of IoT devices, data management, and the importance of user experience in designing WoT applications.

Additionally, collaborating with peers enhanced my problem-solving skills and fostered a deeper appreciation for teamwork. Overall, this course has not only expanded my knowledge but also allowed me to grow both academically and professionally.
